I spent my winter seasons in France staying well away from the slopes during half term, watching the ant-farms crawling from a safe distance! But now, as mum to a five year old, I have no choice. Last week I ventured with my son, Vincent, to Geilo, Norway for the half term holiday with my sisters and friends… and loved it!

Here are five reasons to go to Geilo during half term:

  1. Space = empty slopes. When my sister’s instructor saw more than seven people on the slope he tutted and said, ‘it’s busy today!’. During the busiest part of the week in the early afternoon we were outraged to have to wait two whole minutes to get on the chairlift!

  2. Beauty – simply stunning scenery. This is apparent right from moment you arrive, with your transfer to resort on the magnificent Oslo to Bergen railway - one of the top 20 rail journeys in the world. What a way to start your holiday!
  3. Ski Tuition – the instructors in Geilo are superb. Their passion for skiing is infectious, no matter what your age or ability (or temperament!) and Vincent was beating me down the blues by the end of the week.

  4. Proximity to slopes – one of the Geilolia Forest Cabins was our home for the week, complete with igloo! These are really spacious, cosy and practically a stones throw from the slopes - a quick tow from our cabin in the morning and we were at the ski school next to the main lift in Geilolia. Anyone who has battled to the slopes carrying their own and their children's equipment will understand why this is so important.

  5. Friendly locals – we couldn’t have been made more welcome. Everyone is so helpful and they genuinely want you to enjoy your time there. The staff at the ski centre made the process of picking up lift tickets and rentals and registering for ski school effortless.

Who's it great for?

The ski area is compact and beautifully groomed, just perfect for beginners and early intermediates. If you are looking to take your family skiing for the first time this is definitely my top recommendation. Oh, and did I mention that the slopes are empty?!
